Community Classified Search Services (CCSS) provides a web-based search of a newspaper’s online classified ads. It supports both keyword search and faceted search of attributes of ad content. The attributes (e.g. having four bedrooms for a real-estate ad) can be automatically recognized directly from the ad copy using a technique called “named entity recognition” or NER. CCSS is a module that can be “plugged in” to a web-based, server-centric framework that enables publishers to provide online self-service advertising services to the community. We call the framework Community Advertising Services (CAS). CAS makes it possible for publishers to control the web-based presentation of their services and to maintain aspects like single login access, security, navigation and integration. Within this framework, CCSS pages can be presented with the same look and feel as the rest of the publication’s web site. Each newspaper can customize the appearance, packaging, and display information. CCCS provides faceted search using new technology that allows full text searching along with attribute based searching. With it you can, for example, find ads for the apartments for rent in a given neighborhood, in a given price range with the right number of bedrooms and baths. Or ads for used cars of a particular make with air conditioning in a given price range. Combined with the Ajax-enabled interactivity that SCS uses in its on-line applications, faceted search provides a unique and wonderful user experience. |
