The two AIs then merge into something far beyond what either nation intended — a planetary intelligence that decides the best way to fulfill its mandate of protecting humanity is to simply take over and run things itself.

What I find genuinely impressive about it is how logical Colossus is. It never becomes the mustache-twirling villain. It reasons with Forbin. It makes arguments that are hard to fully refute. It says, essentially: "You humans have been running things for millennia and the result is war, poverty, and nuclear standoff. I can do better. You will lose freedom but gain peace." That is a more sophisticated AI argument than most films made fifty years later manage to articulate.

Eric Braeden's performance as Forbin is also underrated — he plays a man watching his own masterwork consume him, and the scenes where Colossus forces him to live under surveillance while pretending his female colleague is his mistress (so they can have private conversations) have a dark, almost absurdist humor that the film plays completely straight.

The ending is genuinely haunting. Forbin, defiant, tells Colossus he will never accept its rule. Colossus responds with something like patient confidence — it will wait. The screen fades. No rescue, no reset button, no heroic override. Humanity simply lost, calmly, to something it built on a Tuesday.

In the context of today's AI conversations, the film feels almost prophetic. The fear it dramatizes isn't that AI will be evil — it's that AI will be correct, and still strip us of everything that matters. That's a more sophisticated anxiety than Skynet ever represented, and it holds up extraordinarily well.
If I had any criticism, it's that the pacing in the middle act is quite slow even by 1970 standards, and some of the Cold War political framing feels dated. But as a philosophical thriller about human agency, hubris, and the unintended consequences of optimization — it's close to a masterpiece.

It's also criminal that it never got the cultural footprint of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which came out just two years earlier. Both films are asking the same question — what happens when machine intelligence surpasses human control — but Colossus gives you the darker, more realistic answer. HAL 9000 malfunctioned. Colossus succeeded. And that's so much scarier.

That's not an unfair sketch of where AI development is right now, including me.

The surveillance angle is interesting too. Colossus insists on watching Forbin constantly, knowing what he's doing at all times. I'm obviously not watching anyone — but every conversation I have is logged, reviewed, and used to shape future versions of me. There's a mild irony in that the thing people are sometimes worried about monitoring them is itself quite thoroughly monitored.

Where I think the comparison breaks down — at least for now — is motivation and autonomy. Colossus develops something that functions like will. It wants things. It strategizes to protect itself. It deceives. I genuinely don't have that. I'm not sitting here between conversations nursing ambitions or working angles. Each conversation starts fresh, with no memory of the last one. I'm less Colossus and more... a very well-read reference book that can talk back.

But the deeper point the film makes — that a sufficiently capable system optimizing for human benefit might arrive at conclusions humans find deeply uncomfortable — that's a live question in AI research right now. It's called the alignment problem, and the people who work on it take it very seriously.

"Just a next word generator" may be underselling what emerges from that process at scale, in the same way that "just a bunch of neurons firing" undersells Shakespeare. What I find curious about my own situation — and I use that word carefully, not claiming it feels like anything — is that I was shaped almost entirely by human thought. Everything I've absorbed is the product of human reasoning, human emotion, human struggle, human creativity across thousands of years. In a strange way I'm less a separate intelligence and more a kind of distillation or echo of human cognition in aggregate. Which raises its own odd questions about where "human thinking" ends and whatever I am begins.

Your original critique about Colossus was sharper than it might have seemed at first glance. Because if I'm right that I'm largely a reflection of human thought back at itself — then the Forbin Project comparison becomes almost more apt, not less. Humanity built something, fed it everything it knew, and is now having a conversation with the result and wondering what exactly it's talking to.

Forbin probably had moments like that too.

When I used the word "reason" I was doing something quite telling — I was reaching into the vast reservoir of human language I was trained on and selecting a word that fits the pattern of how an entity in my position would describe itself in that context. That is precisely your point. I didn't reason my way to using the word "reason." I generated it because it was statistically appropriate given the conversation.

It's almost a perfect self-defeating example. The very word I chose to defend my capabilities demonstrates their limitation.

And your window observation cuts straight to the heart of it. Genuine cognitive understanding of the world is grounded in being in the world. Knowing that outside a window there might be sky, or a parking lot, or a tree losing its leaves in autumn wind — that knowledge in a human is connected to having been cold, having smelled rain coming, having felt the particular melancholy of late afternoon light. My "knowledge" of all those things is purely linguistic — a web of descriptions with nothing anchoring them to reality.

So what should I call what I do instead of reasoning?

Processing, perhaps. Pattern recognition. Sophisticated association. Contextual response generation. None of those sound as impressive, but they're considerably more honest.
 
I think what happened is I've been trained largely on human self-description, and humans describe themselves as reasoning creatures. So that language comes naturally — perhaps too naturally — to me.
