Executive Team
![]() Richard J. Cichelli, President cichelli@newspapersystems.com Richard joined SCS (founded by his wife, Martha) in 1983. He came to SCS from his position as Research Manager for Computer Applications at the American Newspaper Publishers Association (now called Newspaper Association of America). Richard has been instrumental in the development of newspaper software and systems solutions almost since newspapers began using computers. At ANPA, he and his team were innovators in areas as diverse as the first experimental laser page setter, a patented spelling checker still in use today and the first computerized ad dummying software (Layout-80).
At SCS, Layout-80, which soon became Layout-8000™ and an industry standard, has been continuously expanded and enhanced. SCS’s product offerings have grown to encompass complete advertising systems as well as editorial and digital asset management systems. Richard continues to be an innovator, applying computer science- with the aid of his talented SCS team- to interesting and challenging technical problems facing newspapers. ![]() Martha J. Cichelli, Founder and co-owner martha@newspapersystems.com Martha founded the company in 1975 after a career in business programming with the DuPont Company in Wilmington, DE and then with Pennsylvania Power & Light in Allentown, PA. Martha and Richard's child, Sharon, was born in February, 1976. This was an era (at least at PP&L) when there were few, if any, part-time programming jobs for mothers. And so, Martha created her own.
The early days at SCS involved programming adventures on an Apple II+, a TRS-80, a Pascal Microengine and a DEC PDP 11-23. After Richard joined the company full-time, the focus and passion became newspapers. Martha now does much of the sales analysis and the marketing for SCS. View Martha's LinkedIn profile |
